In the Artist’s Words… I felt Justice Don should have a minimalist design so that images could be read from cars passing at a busy corner. Lady Liberty atop the Allen County Courthouse and the scales of justice painted against a light blue background said what Justice Don, our gentle giant, needed to say. Then vandals struck. I fashioned a healing bandage and added a crutch, ice bag, get-well card, and vase of flowers. The community responded with more flowers, a bottle of aspirin, and a limegreen teddy bear. Little children signed the get-well card. My little mastodon became the city’s symbol of kindness and caring — the essentials of justice. It was so much more than sympathy for broken fiberglass. These gestures were genuine expressions of caring in a larger sense and a message that an effort to destroy will always be met with a greater effort to heal and restore.
