In the Artist’s Words… A coworker at The Journal Gazette volunteered me for the mastodon project. I thought it might be fun, but it was a lot of hard work. I based the theme on something I had done for a Three Rivers Festival Weekender cover from 2004. I’m used to working with programs on a computer screen and electronically enhancing illustrations, but actually painting on the side of this beast was a bear. With the help of volunteer Amanda Beglin, a copy editor, I was able to meet the deadline. I’d like to say “never again” to a project like this, but after seeing all the different mastodons, the hard work and talent that went into this production, and just how cool they look sitting around town, I would definitely try it again.
