In the Artist’s Words… Cave O Don was an opportunity for students at Washington Elementary School to learn something about art history. The goal of the project was to incorporate research about actual cave paintings of ancient peoples at the time of the mastodons. I hung up sample images of actual cave paintings all around the classroom. Students drew these images on large sheets of craft paper which we cut out and decoupaged onto the surface. Kindergarten students traced their hand shapes on paper. I used cutouts of these as stencils for negative handprints in the manner of ancient cave paintings.
