In the Artist’s Words… I chose the red, white, and blue design to represent the American flag on the cover of Best Book. I added wooden stars to give it a 3-D look. The 11 stripes adorning him horizontally were taped off and painted with acrylics. The wooden stars were another story. All of the over 6,500 stars were primed, painted, and then hand inked and applied to the surface. The most amusing moment while working on Freedon came when my mother called to chat and asked what I was doing … I explained that I was gluing stars on a mastodon’s rear end. I have felt honored to be a part of this project, doing something I love for the community.
